Great Item & Easy Installation,
April 18, 2009
By threedogleefrom Rocky Mountains, Idaho.
Pros: Small Control Unit. Easy to put in small places to reduce running wires thru door frame. Fast intsall time Cons: Could use a little bit better installation guide with package.
"I had it installed in 10 minutes once I understood the system I was working with. I hope this helps as it is long on my part but may help to make it easy to install the unit. Also find where you are going to put the black box first before you start drilling it fits in the door easy so you don't have to drill or run wire from the door to the dash.
I have a 1998 Windstar and it has different wiring than anything they show in manual or on-line. With taking apart my plug from the door control wiring and checking with voltmeter I started to see the way to make the system work with my Ford.
I connected the keyless system to power it and ground it (Red + / Black - )
I temporarily connected the lock side wire of the switch in my car (you have to do some testing to find) to the keyless lock wire (Yellow). While holding the Polarity Input (White wire) to a (positive +) I pushed the FOB lock button once. In my Ford this did not lock the door so I switched the Polarity Wire (White) to a Ground and it worked.
In your auto if the lock locks you have the Polarity Input right. You can not hook up the unlock wire and close up.
If that did not lock the door then you have to ground the (White Wire) and still holding the (Yellow Wire) in the same place as the first time push the FOB lock button once again and this should now lock. If this works now hook up the unlock wires and close up the door.
You can easily put the whole system in the door cavity as it is so small just use double sided tape to secure it. It helps to remove all the extra wires from the connector before you finish installing the system, they come out easy from the white connector and that way you will not ground out the system by mistake later. Hope this helped.."

Pros: easy to install, easy to understand instruction, no special tools needed
"Purchased this item a few weeks ago and installed it right away the instruction were easy to follow. It took some time to install but it was not the fault of the product it was getting around items under the dash in the 1997 ford f150. The product worked flawlessly and was everything JC.Whitney sais it was. Thanks"

cheap and easy,
January 29, 2009
By weelliottfrom Maryland
Pros: Inexpensive, easy to understand wiring
"I have a 95 legacy that came with power locks, but not remote entry. It uses a switch on the driver's door lock to actuate all other doors through a funky computer under the dash. That computer died. So I figured that this would be a good replacement for it.
I did a little research and found that the Valiant unit puts out juice to the solenoids for a second or so to actuate the locks, and figured it would work since that is what the OEM unit does. Unfortunately it is designed to be wired into the switch circuit, not the solenoid circuit, which is the same on most cars, but mine had a computer between those two sides. If my Subaru computer worked, this would have been an easier install. However, since it didn't, it got a little more challenging. It still works fine though.
For those who care about the details...
The OEM solenoids have two wires going to them. To lock the doors, the computer routes 12V to one and grounds the other. To unlock them it reverses the polarity. It sends the voltage for only a second or so, then shuts off.
The Valiant unit does not send 12V to one and ground the other. It only sends 12V to one wire on lock, and to the other wire on unlock. Noting gets grounded, which my car needed. I got around this by using two DPDT relays. You only need single throw, but you need two poles on each. (I don't know if you can buy a dual pole single throw relay now that I think about it.) Basically one relay is activated by the Valiant unit's wire that is designed to send 12V to the solenoid on a lock command. The other relay is activated by the other wire. When a given relay is activated, it sends positive juice to one solenoid wire using one set of contacts, and grounds the other wire using the other set of contacts. The other relay is wired to send the opposite polarities. Pretty simple actually.
Unfortunately the 95 subaru legacy doesn't have a solenoid on the driver's door. So the keyless entry doesn't unlock or lock that door. However, I don't mind this. I value the keyless entry most when my hands are full. When they are full, I am going to a rear door, or the back hatch, which are unlockable with the keyless entry. So I still have to use my key, but I can now lock and unlock my rear hatch, which since I didn't have the valet key(PO lost it) had been unlocked for a few months. And I don't have to reach to the back doors to unlock them. Eventually I might go to a junk yard and get a solenoid out of another subaru to mount in the driver's door. Other years have a switch on the armrest instead of being actuated by the driver's lock, so they would have a drivers door solenoid to grab.
So the unit is solid. It took no programming. The remotes worked as soon as I hooked up the wires. A multimeter and a very simple understanding of wiring is all one needs. (Like a fifth grade understanding.)
The only reason I gave it four stars versus five is that I think it would be good if it had the ability to ground the opposite wire of the solenoids. I'd imagine that there are other applications where this woudl be helpful. But keep in mind I only needed that feature since I was trying to replace a broken part on my car and gain keyless entry. If my car's OEM door-locking computer would have worked, this would be a moot point.
I included a wiring diagram of the relays I put in. I did it from memory, and I am sure it is correct except for the colors of the solenoid wires might be switched. If they lock on the unlock command and unlock on lock, then just swap those two wires. Also, you will need to send positive 12V to the white wire on the unit."

Easy to install,
January 8, 2009
By Kazoo68from Raleigh, NC
Pros: Inexpensive, works great Cons: Just being picky, but the remote is all black so you can't tell the lock from the unlock. No big deal really.
"I recently purchased a 2003 Civic which did not have the keyless entry option. I had the car apart for 2 months while trying to find a OEM module. I didn't want to have to do any hard wiring in the car, but after no luck finding what I needed I bought 2 of these; the other for my wife's Mits. I had received these in the mail and I already had the wires located, but just didn't feel good about splicing into the wiring, especially the +12v constant. Then I found the Posi-tap, they cost me $30.00 for a small assortment, but it took less than 5 minutes to install the system. I was amazed when it actually worked because it was so easy. I then did my wife's car the following weekend; it took about 45 minutes start to finish, including 4-5 trips upstairs for misc tools. The range on it is pretty good, I would say I have unlocked my car from at least 75ft away."

Pros: good price, works great so far Cons: instructions are really bad
"put this on a 2004 silverado. what they dont tell you is that you need another 40 dollar integration module to make it talk to the computor on late model GM products. after several calls to customer service I got all the info that I needed to finish instalation. So far it works great. lets me open just the driver door or both doors. park lights flash and the dome light comes on. satisfied so far, will post more if I have trouble with unit."

Well worth the money,
August 21, 2008
By Bobby57from Rocky Mount, NC
Pros: Works great Cons: None
"This is the third remote from Jc Whitney all worked well. The first was installed in a 1996 ford windstar. The last unit was to replace one that I installed in a 1998 silverado chevy truck in 1998. The unit was still good but the remotes wore out. I placed the new unit in the same place as the old one, under the drivers door lock swith . all the wires I needed were located in this area. The power windows, mirror remote and door lock lift up easy. I used the 12 + power from the mirror switch. It took me about 30 minutes to connect . However I realize I replace a older unit. The new unit connected a litle different THIS IS A VERY GOOD PRODUCT. I also told a friend about this He installed one in a foreign made SUV. It worked great as well"

"Can't beat for the bucks, easy install on my 91 Toyo Cressida, only problem is the stupid factory alarm system that I can't find info to disable without rendering the power locks inop. If I just lock the doors after closing them the alarm never arms."

By 41streetrod
Pros: fair price, remote closely resembles the one on new GM cars, good instructions Cons: at this time I find no cons
"I installed the ICD remote on my 41 chevy streetrod. I combined this installation with the installation of of the power door locks I removed from a doner Cadillac. I did much research before purchasing this unit and with the installation complete I feel I made a good choice. The locks and the remote systen work as expected."

Just Installed - Tips for Ford Taurus,
May 6, 2008
By JT337
Pros: Relatively Inexpensive Cons: Instructions were a little confusing for my application, wiring information was slightly incorrect
"I just finished installation of the 2RTA unit yesterday on a 2005 Ford Taurus. Once I found the correct wires the installation process was relatively straightforward. The information on the IC Dynamics website said the trunk release wire would be gray/red when it actually was purple/yellow. The problem I had working alone was that there were not enough hands to operate the multi-meter and press the door lock button. Also, another thing that threw me was that I was expecting the correct wires to read nothing on the multi-meter until the lock or unlock button was pressed. They actually read 11.5v and spiked to 12.5v when the lock or unock button was pressed. It was hard to tell the difference on an analog multi-meter. Made more sense when I worked with a digital multi-meter after I finally found the wires using a test light which activated the lock or unlock when it found the wire (not a recommend thing to do but it's what finally worked for me). The trunk connection turned out to be a negative connection so the brown wire needed to go to ground (with the black and white wires) rather than +12v. The IC Dynamics staff helped me figure that out. This is my first experience with car wiring although I had done several boat wiring projects. All total I probably spent 8 or more hours; but could probably do another one in 2 or 3. If the unit works reliably as I expect it to, it will have been worth the effort."

Easy Installation,
May 4, 2008
By Bryan94
Pros: Simplistic
"I recently installed this on a 02 Ford Taurus. I have never installed electronics in a car before, but with the help of the wire schematics and the diagram with the device I figured it out. I had to locate the GEM module which was to the left of the stearing column. I connected the needed wires through a few trial and error processes on the drivers door and the GEM module. The white wire was the key for my mistakes. I had it connected to the 12V source (which I used the 12V wire from the trunk release button in the car) instead of the ground on the door lock. Once I switched that it worked like a champ. Which the diagram tells you to do depending on the polarity. The trunk release wires gave me trouble and I was not successful in that event. The keyless entry system I mounted to the inside of the door with the wire antenna up. The system works from at least 30 ft away, and I have had no problems with it as of yet. As a novice, it took me about 2.5 hours to install. Actual man hours to install would be about a half hour for someone more knowledgeable about electronics than I. But it can be done by a novice."

Pros: Works like a dream. Cons: None
"I've had this unit for over 8 years and have installed it on two vehicles an 89 Ford Tempo and a 00 Chevrolet Malibu. It works as well as the manufactures original equipment. ICD has great tech support & customers’ service. Replacement remotes can be purchased directly from ICD for under $20 + shipping cost and can be programming by you. Great buy, Great price, “I HIGHLY RECOMMEND”"

"The KEYLESS DOOR SYSTEM for my '95 Honda Civic EX is really great! The hardest thing was wondering where to run all the wires. It took around 30 minutes to install and worked the first time. It really makes it nice not having to use the key."

Pros: Easy to install Cons: n/a
"For inexpensive this was a real bargin, the install was easy, the web page was correct on the wiring to cut into. The whole install was completed in about 3 hours. Works everytime...Good as OEM, and about $300 cheaper. Also a help is GM has a plug under the glove box for this very same add-on item, so power and ignition is already there, and big label on the wiring."

December 25, 2007
By hazellfrom Kansas
Pros: Price Cons: Instructions for Vehicle
"Once I found the info for the wiring on the internet for a 2001 Toyota Corolla S this was a easy install. The wires you need to splice into for this install are locate in a white plug on the right side of the fuse box. The blue/black wire for the lock side and the Green/white wire for the unlock side. The 2001 toyota is a negative polarity install. this turned out to be a great Gift for my daughter."

Fairly simple to install,
May 24, 2007
By da2962from CT
"I installed this product on my 1994 Ford Explorer and after a few false starts it went in fairly easily. The biggest problem I ran into was where to put the box. The directions suggested that it be put under the dash, but after crawling around for a while I just couldn't find the room. Ended up putting it on the kick panel, and as long as I am careful its relatively out of the way. Once I figured out which of the wiring diagrams to use the rest was fairly straight forward. Worked first time once it was hooked up. Overall a decent product for the price."
