Pros: very cheap cruise control
Cons: very cheap installation instructions
"don't torque the throttle cable down too hard because the threaded end is pewter and will snap off. I broke the end off the threads, but still had enough threads for it to work....
the instructions are TERRIBLE and incomplete. wiring diagrams are included ONLY for cars from 92 to 95. EVERYTHING in the instructions is confusing and written like it was written in a foreign language and then poorly translated into English. There is NO TROUBLESHOOTING information provided. To get it working, you have to use trial and error to reverse engineer the thing to figure out how to program the settings... The instructions tell you what dip switches to set to change the settings, but the instructions don't give ANY hint as to if you might need to increase or decrease the sensitivity and the PPM setting.... All of this does not inspire confidence in the long-term reliability of the components.... next time I will be happy to spend an extra $150 for a better quality cruise control with better instructions so I don't have to waste an entire day messing with the thing, so I have more confidence in it's reliability, and so I am not dealing with a company that puts out this kind of low quality stuff. Do yourself a favor... buy better quality than this. Cruise control needs to work correctly - it's a safety issue - don't take your chances experimenting with this low quality kit."

Hard to install,

Pros: does it's job
Cons: installation on Toyota 2003 Echo
"I took the car and cruise control to a mechanic who I consider to be very good. He said that none of the parts in the box were for an Echo. He had to make the brackets. Then he said the instructions were no good. He called Toyota mechanics help line and didn't get answers to his question. He finally just installed it by trial and error. He couldn't find some of the electrical connections. He finally got it installed and it seems to work ok so far. Be sure your up on electrical wiring if you plan to put it on an Echo."

Works Great Hard to Install.,

Pros: Quick responce and smooth control system, Small control panel on Dash, Lights for night time use.
Cons: Hard to understand instructions, Audiovox could do better to improve manual. Audiovox Customer Service POOR Responce.
"I am good at auto repairs and installs. This unit could be installed easier with a manual that was up to date. Audiovox makes good money on these and should spend some on research for a better manual to make the install easier. I spend long hours trying to find the VSS on the car I just bought. Even the shop manual I have did not do well explaining the location of the VSS. I knew it was near one of the transaxels but it was hidden behind the exhaust and lots of framework. I found it after hours of searching while laying in the dirt. Yes once installed and working it is a great unit and keeps my car at the correct speed. I just have a problem with companies that sell thigs and leave the manuals short on detail when just a few weeks of R&D on their part could save people days or hours of work. If you have a car or truck do research first on where (if you have one)the VSS is or where the wires from it are found in the car, and make sure you find them first before ordering this unit. If you have a van with a transaxel you are in for tight work installing this unit but will be happy when it is working.
I would suggest buying this unit if you need a cruise control but do your homework on your car or truck first to be ready for the install."

installed on '96 Cavalier,

Pros: good strong decisive cruise control
Cons: trouble shooting reference is a little schetchy
"I've experience with this unit on a Corolla and liked it. That unit was purchased at and installed by Duke's car accessories. When I bought subject Cavalier for work car I wanted to do the same. I couldn't find any one who installed them, and JC Whitney seems to be the only parts source to still sell them. Installation took 5 hours (mostly due to cramped access to wiring on cavalier). I had to trouble shoot wiring and the documentation supplied with the unit was not specific as to readings on the tach and speed wires. I found more recent (and complete) documents on the audiovox website which provided the necessary info. (there are three green/white wires running from the PCM on my car). Unit seemed to work ok without vacuum canister but I installed it because it is recomended, therefore purchased."

Well worthwhile,

Pros: Small, unobtrusive control panel
Cons: Can't think of any
"Installed in a 1969 SAAB Sonett about 7 years ago (and yet still under $100 today!). It makes long trips so much more pleasant. It holds speed very well on flats, up hills, and down gradual hills, however.... The free-wheel feature (no engine braking) on the SAABs of this vintage do 'confuse' the controller. On steep downhills the car's speed increases. The control cuts back the fuel. Due to the free-wheel the car doesn't slow as the engine does when fuel is reduced. The control reduces fuel further until control drops out at some low engine rpm. The fueling does not resume fueling as the bottom of the hill as the car's speed drops back to or below the set speed. It's necessary to merely press "resume" to re-activate. With 'normal' cars that have engine braking, and when I have my free-wheel device locked out to produce engine braking, this idiosyncracy, probably an unmentioned safety feature to deactivate the system if road speed goes some amount over set speed, is unlikely to be noticed. It might be possible to duplicate the same conditions by shifting a normal car to neutral when coasting down a hill with the unit on and trying to control the descent speed, but 'normal' drivers might not think to do that. The system had reasonably easy installation, had adequate detail in the instructions, and is super easy and intuitive to use. I did later change from a throttle plate pull as I originally installed it, to a pedal pull connection because that configuration suits this specific car better, but there has not been any need to adjust anything in the 7+ years it's been in the car. In hind sight I'd probably have also wanted the vacuum reservoir, but this 1500 cc V4 is apparently just big enough to not want for a lack of vacuum to operate the servo and hold speed up steep hills. (hope I can come back and edit to add images.)"

Pros: quality construction, works as expected, good instructions, great for highway driving
Cons: did not have all the hardware necessary for attaching the servo cable to my vehicle.
"I installed this unit on my 96 Dodge Dakota. I am a fairly competent DIYer, but my electrical knowledge is somewhat lacking. For this reason I was a little apprehensive in doing this installation. I have the factory service manual for my truck which includes detailed wiring diagrams. This helped immensely and I would not recommend installing this unit without factory wiring diagrams. Taking my time, following the instructions and double checking before proceeding I was able to install this unit correctly. I did have to scrounge up some additional hardware to attach the servo cable to my truck's throttle body, but was able to find what I needed at the local hardware store. My truck has a grey colored dash so the control switch looks very much at home on it. The unit holds the set speed very well. It will drop about 2 or 3 mph from the set speed when it initially engages, but gets back to the set speed quickly and keeps it there. The resume, accel and coast functions all work well. I have about 150 miles now on the unit and look forward to putting many more on it. It definitely helps when driving on the highway. It is reasonably priced. It cost me around $100 to install this unit versus the hundreds it would have cost using factory parts."

Adapatable to Distributorless Ignition,
December 5, 2008
By BruceL
|
Pros: Relatively Simple to Install, Works Well.
Cons: Minimal Tech Support
"The unit is easy to install Unless you have a newer vehicle with a manual transmission. The unit relies on both the speed sensor AND a "tach" signal to prevent engine over-speeding if the clutch is depressed while the speed control is engaged. My '02 Jeep Wrangler uses distributor-less ignition and has no traditional "tach signal pick-up." The instruction don't cover this but, set a dip switch to "ECM" instead of "tach" and read the engine speed from the Cam or Crank sensor. It works great in my application. It will still work if you don't, as long as you remember to turn off the cruise control before depressing the clutch."

Did it, Done it, Love IT,

Pros: Works great and installs easily even in an older car without damaging things.
Cons: wish the instructions were all in one manual
"Installed this into my 1959 Cadillac. The throttle linkage works in reverse of modern vehicles, pushing to the front of the engine instead of pulling to the rear. Had to create a special bracket to mount the cable to work with the linkage and made it out of the parts that came with the unit. Mounted the cruise control hidden within the fender on the wheel well routing the cable to the bracket. It is hidden well so as not to detract from the engine compartment and works great. Mounted the dash control on the left carpeted kick panel just below the dash so as not to damage or drill into the dash. Just a little hole in the carpeting! Only I know it is there and it works great. Test drove it up the mountains in Colo, set it at 75 with the air on and it stayed at 75. Used the magnets for the drive shaft and followed the instructions to program the cruise. Thank You for allowing me to finally have cruise on my 59 Cadillac. Read all the installation manuals before starting anything. Wish they were in one book."

Great unit,

Pros: Dependable, easy install, works easily
Cons: hard to hook to throttle
"I purchased this unit for my 2005 Cavalier (Yes I said 2005) and it worked flawlessly. I built a vacuum canister for the thing out of 1' long 2" PVC pipe that I painted black and two caps (drilled a hole in the end and siliconed an adapter into the end. I got the proper wiring pinout for my car from Audiovox and hooked it into the cars VSS, when done properly by someone who knows what they are doing it is very simple to install and easy. I suppose if you had never installed something like this it may be kind of difficult. Holds hills just fine on the 2.2l Cavalier. Had a bit of a hard time hooking the throttle cable up to the cars Throttle Body."

"I installed this cruise control into my 1996 Geo Tracker. The control fit into a space on the dash to the left of the steering column and looks factory installed, no cutting or destroying. The instructions were simple if you know how to read and install things and simply plugged into the existing computer wiring. Think it through and it is easy. Works great and looks great. The Geo has the 4 cylinder and so I purchased the extra vacuum tank as instructed. I live in the mountains and it could not maintain a constant speed going up long grades so installed a second larger vacuum tank to help. Cured the problem and holds the speed to the limits of the engine power."

Pros: SMALL IN SIZE, BUT HAS JUST ABOUT ALL OF THE HARDWARE TO MAKE THE INSTALL PRETTY SIMPLE
Cons: THE FACTORY WIRING HARNESS LEADS ARE TOO SHORT FOR USE ON REAR ENGINE VEHICLES, I HAD TO LEGNTHEN ALL WIRE LEADS
"I bought this unit to install into a 1984 Porsche 3.2 Carrera. The speedsensor hook-up would not function due to excessive RF interference, so it had to be used with the coil type application. All of the control wires were too short, had to lengthen them about 4feet. I had to fabricate a bracket with the supplied hardware, to connect to the throttle body arm. After I got all of the "bugs" worked out it seemed to work quite well. I would purchase another, but they have gone up so much in the cost over the last couple of years. The price I paid was $79.99 that included FREE SHIPPING. At that time. this unit was the lowest price Cruise Control System they had, now is just about the most expensive set-up. I would buy another, but it would have to be at a more realistic price!"
