Great Item!,

Pros: My spare is mounted ROCK SOLID Cons: Hey, this was not a fun install.
"A few years ago I bought some big BF Goodrich tires for my wife's 2004 Rubicon, and of course, I had to have one for the spare. Well, after breaking three "stock" spare tire mounts it was clear we needed a real mounting solution. After some research and then reading the installation manual on-line this item seemed like a perfect fit. The installation difficulty is rated a 3 out of 4 and estimated time is 2 hours. Perhaps it's because I sit at a desk all day, but for me that 3 is really a 3.9999999 and 2 hours dragged on to 7 over two days. I had to buy a few tools - I had a Torx set but this needs a #50 .. my set stopped at 40. Also, I needed a BIG wrench for the adjusting nut. One problem was figuring out which nuts and bolts were being referred to in the directions. It helped to lay out and sort them ... matching was then done by count. Drilling is always scary but I had minimal problems. The holes for the top passenger side hinge came out about 1/4 inch too low. Since the hole is simply to slide a bolt through I just made it a tad bigger. After installation I had a few nuts and washers and bolts left over. I guess (hope) I don't need them - hahahahah.
So how it it? Boy, it works like a charm! rock solid, very smooth operation and it looks great! The spare fits perfectly without any wobble or play. One unexcepted benefit -- when I was using the stock tire mount the spare blocked the 3rd tail-light. This unit raises the bracket so the light is now clearly seen (a plus not mentioned in the instructions). Bottom line, I have no worries that the tire will fall off one day while driving down the freeway.
At the time of writing this there is one other review that touches on installation difficulty. I guess maybe it's like having surgery - afterward you think that wasn't so bad, but at the time it was not fun. Keep in mind I have very little mechanical experience - but I have a few ground-rules that always help me: lay out all of the parts, read each step carefully, measure multiple times, test fit everything, take your time, and have patience. You will be rewarded with a great looking carrier that works exactly as advertised!"

"I bought this carrier for my 2004 Jeep Wrangler Sport. Because I had already install various Bushwacker accessories on my Jeep, it made the installation even harder. Together with my brother (who is a mechanic), it took about 3 hours to install. Some drilling is required. Longer bolts will be required if you have Bushwacker accessories already installed. Once installed, it is a very sturdy carrier."
