IC998, July 20, 2009
By murfman from Atl GA

Pros: small
Cons: didn't work

"We used this based on the reviews online. Opps. The unit was used on highway, with a full wind screen, an ipod plugged into it and a two full face helmets. With the ipod the passanger heard music but couldn't hear the driver, the driver could barely hear music and no passanger. Disconnect the ipod and we could talk at speeds less than 25 mph, any faster and we could hear a faint voice and driver couldn't hear the passanger over the wind and road noise. I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone."

Buy the Highway Version for all speeds!, June 24, 2009
By BAL02 from SE Minnesota

Pros: IC-998 Works at all legal speeds...
Cons: Volume could be higher at highway speeds.

"I was given one of the City Units, for free, and it works fine up to around 40-45 MPH. After that, all I can hear is engine and wind roaring, even when my wife and I shout loudly. I took a chance and ordered the Highway Unit (IC-998), hoping it would perform well at speeds above 45 MPH -- I wasn't disappointed.

The IC-998 performs well at speeds of up to 60 MPH (we have not used it at higher speeds yet), but it does require us to speak loudly into the headset, and our helmets. We are not required to shout, though, so it is not too bad a deal. At highway speeds, wind noise, in our full-face helmets, was only occasionally noticeable, and even when it was present, it did not interfere with our conversations.

We have two minor issues with the IC-998 unit: first, the maximum volume could be louder, as we always run with them wide open, and this is not quite as loud as we would like them to be at highway speeds; secondly, the headset uses hooks, as in hook-and-loop connectors (a.k.a., VelcroTM), to secure itself to the interior of our helmets -- there is a hole in the interior padding over the ears, so there is nothing for the hooks to grab inside our helmets. These are minor quibbles, really, but I thought consumers might be interested in knowing before deciding to purchase.

I wear 32 dB ear plugs, religiously, when riding. My wife does not. We could both hear the intercoms at full volume, at highway speeds. We wish we had purchased this device much sooner. It really makes riding two-up so much more enjoyable! Don't waste your money on the city version, just buy the higway version (ZX312178), and use it for riding wherever: it will function fully at any speed, up to the legal limit. Cheers!

Pros: Price, easy to use
Cons: not good on highway, foam microphone cover, hook&loop not strong,

"We purchased this for a 16 trip out west at the last minute. The set we wanted was backordered but this one's reviews were ok and price ok since we needed it quick. It was easy to put on but mine kept coming loose-needs stronger hook & loop material. We both lost the foam cover for the microphone halfway thru. Good while going slow but could barely hear while yelling on highway. Got static periodically. Would like the microphone a little longer also. It did hold up after being dropped several times to that was good so that was a plus. It was ok for the money but would like to try a more robuse unit."

Pros: Price, Setup,Works as described (town version)
Cons: Wires are a bit long, could have had a built in radio

"Very good entry level system. Build quality looks good and the boom mics are bendable and not flimsy. As described the town version is flawless on the wind noise up to 45-50 mph in a 3/4 open face helmet and varies depending on design of a full face helmet. Wind noise and volume are independently adjustable (a nice feature) So it can be adjusted so highway speeds to supress wind noise but still alowing conversation but speaking in an above normal voice. Otherwise it works flawlessy in the advertised speed range. I found a simple wind break made from a plastic bottle and taped to the mic helps the wind noise above the rated speed. Aux input makes hooking any external device with a head phone jack a snap provided you have a 1/8 male to 1/8 male phono patch cable (availible most anywhere)"

Helmet to Helmet Intercom System - ZX264297, June 23, 2006
By Anatolian Woman from Indiana

"I bought the intercom system to take with me on a motorcycle trip to Turkey in February 2006. We found the system to be easy to use and was a great addition to our travels. It was nice to talk to each other and not have to point, "helmet knock" or just sit silent!

The installation of the headset was simple & easy to put into our helmets (using hook tape to fasten to the helmet lining ). The microphone was comfortable and did not interfere with the helmet.

As we drove in the cities, the ability to hear each other was excellent. On a negative note, we did find that as we were traveling out on the highways and/or at higher speeds, the air coming thru our helmets caused voice distortion so that we could not hear each other as well as when we were driving slower or driving in the city.

To eliminate voice distortion, perhaps there could be an option to wear the earpiece directly on our ear instead of attaching to the helmet lining.
