MAGNAFLOW® DIRECT-FIT CATALYTIC CONVERTER, October 30, 2008
By Anonymous

Pros: A lot less costly than to buy in Canada, even with customs duty.
Cons: Missing gasket.

"Very happy with the item. Fit my 95 Saturn perfectly. Was missing a gasket, however. Will have to order through my dealership. Very cost effective. To buy a catalytic converter in Canada, it would cost anywhere from 4 to 8 times more. Even with the customs duty, it saved me a lot of money, and I have no complaints about it."

excellent replacement cat, September 4, 2008

Pros: quality construction, perfect fit
Cons: no hardware, no instructions

"my '94 gmc sonoma (140,000 miles) started chugging and coughing at hiway speeds, and made a horrible rattling at idle. a quick listen (under the truck) revealed that the cat was toast.

the exhaust shop wanted $300 to replace it. i told them what they could do with that. jcw had the best price at $86.

shipping seemed a little long on this item. it shipped direct from the factory.

i have used magnaflow parts before, and i find them to be of good quality. the stainless steel construction is a plus.

i am not an auto mechanic by trade, but i do virtually all my own mechanical work. i was somewhat disappointed that there was no associated hardware (ie: bolts, nuts, washers) with this part. also, no instructions or guidlines. i realize it's a simple part, but some guideance on where to make the cut on removing the old one would have been nice. i cut the old cat off with an electric cutoff saw as close to the cat as possible. this is on the end closest to the engine. the old cat was cold swaged to the down pipe so there was no other way to remove it. this left part of the old cat's inlet on the down pipe which made a perfect place to weld on the new cat. contrary to the item description, on the '94 sonoma application YOU WILL HAVE TO WELD THE NEW CAT ON! on my truck, the old bolts were so corroded the could not be removed with an impact or sawed off with a sawzall. THEY HAD TO BE TORCHED OFF! i'm not necessarily upset about this, but this installation on this application is not a bolt in deal; be prepared to weld, torch and saw.

other than those issues, the cat went on relatively easily, and has cured the chugging missing issue. you could see inside the old cat that a chunk of the catylist had broken free and was plugging the outlet. i am also replacing the o2 sensor, but that will be a separate review.

overall, happy with this product.

Not so Direct-fit, August 23, 2008

Pros: Great looks, seemingly solid construction
Cons: Not really a direct fit part, or at least not for my wife's Subaru Legacy

"Let me start by stating that I am not an auto mechanic. I am, however, not a guy who has never seent he underside of a car either.
I purchased this in liu of replacing the rear catalytic converter on my wife's '99 Subaru Legacy with an OEM part (~$800!!!!). Really dissapointed in Magnaflow advertising this as a "direct-fit" for her car, it is not:
The factory bolts are to short to fit the (thicker) Magnaflow flanges, yet the cat does not come with any hardware
The cat came with a hole for an O2 sensor which is probably great for cars that have a sensor to thread into this location. The Subie does not. Ever try to purchase an O2 sensor plug? Let's just say you will not find one at your local auto parts store.
I am only complaining because it was advertised as direct fit, which to me means you pull the old one off and bolt on the new one w/o having to purchase anything else. However, the thing seems to be bulletproof in its construction and as long as it passes inspection (NYS) next spring I will be very pleased.
